Sealord Development Programme

Leadership Development works closely with Sealord in helping grow and develop their people for the future.

Terry Horne, Sealord's General Manager of corporate services says the programme is a quality programme with breadth and depth, which focuses on the total person and those who have completed the programme agree.

The programme was first launched at Sealord shellfish in 2007 and at the company's Vickerman street site in 2009 with 21 people graduating.

The programme was developed after discussions with senior executives and two training providers - Shaaron Adams of Leadership Development NZ Ltd and Solutions in Seafood Ltd. The programme was then customised combining the expertise of the two providers and allowing for significant support and input from the executive team.

Sealord's commltment to developing people both personally and professionally is one of the fundamental criteria underpinning the leadership development process; the other is buy-in from all key stakeholders and senior management, in order to ensure commitment to, and continuity of, training initiatives

Sealord senior management were fully involved in the formal launch of the programme at each site and gave ongoing support to participants. This ongoing support, plus the fact the programme is run over an extended period, with opportunities to reinforce learning, are keys to its success.

"This was a very successful programme which has exceeded our expectations. we are very pleased with the way it went and will be continuing the programme in 2009," said Mr Horne.

The first stage of the programme was a formal launch to participants followed by two fun filled interactive days at Whenua Iti Outdoors, with a focus on team-building and communication. Staff were from different areas of the business, and two days away from work helped to break down any silos that previously existed.

Supervisors of staff involved in the programme were briefed at the outset. After the two days at Whenua lti there was a feedback session for participants and their immediate supervisors to enable participants to transfer their learning to Sealord.

This provided a platform for the second stage of the programme which ran for four months. Participants met once a fortnight with Shaaron Adams of Leadership Development New Zealand working towards a National Certificate in Business (First Line Management) (Level 3) This enabled them to consolidate the knowledge they had gained, integrated the practical and theoretical components and gave them the opportunity to reflect on what they had learnt.
