LOGISTICS QUALIFICATION FOR LIFE-LONG LEARNER

Palmerston North adult learner Marty Feehan really knows how to get things moving.

The Truck Stops (NZ) Ltd Distribution Manager seen here receiving a National Diploma in Logistics, a qualification offered by Tranzqual.

The diploma is the first qualification Marty has achieved since leaving school. "To pass feels brilliant. I had not studied since the sixth form and I wasn't sure if I had the learning capability."

Marty decided to go back to the books in 2006 after working more than 20 years in the road transport and freight industry. He wanted to back up his work experience with a formaI qualification, he said.

"I had all this hands-on experience but I didn't have the bit of paper to back it up and say that I did, so originally that is all I was working towards - getting the bit of paper."

The five core areas of the course included front-line management, interpersonal communication, road transport management, logistics operations as well as some elective papers.

Despite a wealth of experience, he soon found he was learning more than he had expected.

"For one I found there were some things I didn't know everything about, secondly, where I did have the knowledge I was opened up to new techniques."

Marty says one of the most interesting aspects of the course centred on creating a positive working environment for staff and positive working relationships.

"It makes you think about how and why we do certain things, what makes a good manager and how to motivate others."

"Even if you think you are a good manager and are doing a good job it makes you realise what would happen if we didn't have these important aspects in place."

Marty says he used many work examples throughout the course and that lead to a number of positives for his company from day-to-day.

"It has made a big difference to our company. I have been able to identify areas in my work where I have been able to save money, there is less downtime for staff - everything is rosier.

"I would say to anyone thinking about doing a similar course, give it a go. When you have the diploma it shows you have the knowledge in your particular area - it won't do any harm, it will only help you."

Fiona Knight of Leadership Development New Zealand says Marty worked hard juggling full-time work and study. However, she said it was obvious he had great motivation.

"Some people who go into the workforce from school get into their career and are too busy to complete any formaI qualifications so this has been positive for Marty and his company as well," she says.
